Thanks to travel gurus Sawday’s for featuring us on the website as a recommended Bristol B&B

It’s a hostel, so it’s not for those who want hush, posh or privacy but it couldn’t have a friendlier vibe. You’ve a choice of places to sit and work or chat: reception has a busier buzz with folk wandering in and out, probably music and help-yourself coffee and tea; the sitting room is downstairs and quieter with interesting books. Upstairs you’ll find eclectic art on the walls, shared dorms, private doubles and family rooms, some en suite and some with shared bathrooms – all dazzlingly white and new.

The ethical credentials here are impressive: this is the second brilliant social enterprise scheme initiated by Ben Silvey – the first is where you have your breakfast. Just over a courtyard is The Kitchen, an award-winning café in the old fire station serving fresh local produce. Both businesses are owned and managed by YMCA Bristol, and any profits made are re-invested in supporting young people who are homeless in the city.

They don’t accept hen or stag parties so the feel is civilised and warm. It will suit single travellers, couples and families equally well and is excellent value – you can even do your washing and drying for free.
